KPU Ensures Vote Counting in 2024 Elections Safe From Hackers

KPU ensures vote counting in 2024 elections safe from hackers

Indonesia’s General Elections Commission (KPU) member Idham Holik ensured that the process of manual and stage-wise counting and recapitulation of votes is safe from hackers.

“(Because) the authentication of the vote count results and recapitulation is done manually (and) not done digitally,” Holik stated during an online discussion to address the recent alleged leak of data of the permanent voter list, as followed here on Saturday.

The counting and recapitulation of votes is regulated in Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections. In the law, he said, the recapitulation of votes is carried out manually and in stages, starting from the polling stations to nationally.

“Law No. 7 of 2017 does not specifically mention the use of electronic technology,” he remarked.

Although the KPU applies the Recapitulation Information System (Sirekap), he stated that the system is only a tool to show the public the estimated results in advance and is not used as official results.

“We must fulfil public information related to the vote collection, counting, and recapitulation in the 2024 election,” he explained.

Meanwhile, the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) has conducted digital forensic investigation to analyse and investigate the cause of the alleged data leak experienced by KPU.

“In handling the cyber incident that occurred in the KPU, BSSN is conducting analysis and digital forensic investigation on the application and server to find out the root cause,” BSSN spokesperson Ariandi Putra remarked here on Friday (December 1).

Earlier, a hacker named “Jimbo” claimed to have hacked the KPU website and leaked voter data from the site.

The account shared 500 thousand sample data in a single post on the BreachForums site, where hacked data is sold.
