Indonesia Bids for Olympics 2032

In 2018 Indonesia became a late replacement host of what was largely regarded as a successful Asian Games.

Directly supported by President Jokowi, Indonesia has registered its application to host the 2032 Olympic Games. The only other and more advanced bid is from Brisbane. The Olympics are on a different scale from the Asian Games. So, what underpins Indonesian belief that there its bid has a chance? Or like London, is a failed bid almost a prerequisite to subsequent bidding success?

On 15th of July, we talked to the Indonesian Olympic Committee team (Komite Olimpiade Indonesia - KOI) that has been crafting the RI bid and is about to embark on a charm offensive in Tokyo. As the bid for the Games today is evolving toward looking for economic impact and creation of legacy, Indonesia is Southeast Asia's best showcase how the games can be impactful.

We asked challenging questions about what a successful bid might mean to RI - sports and youth development, economic impacts and show-casing Indonesia as a real international player.

For sure a successful bid will need to demonstrate a strong commitment to optimizing the use of legacy existing infrastructure and maximizing sustainability, as well as being able to guarantee an unforgettable experience for competitors and and spectators. Are such commitments realistic?

KOI has informally asked for support for its bid from the foreign Chambers of Commerce and private sector business groups. We examined the assertion that foreign business can benefit if success will impact on issues such as the environmental record, international profile and accelerated infrastructure development.
