Approaching its 90th Anniversary, Unilever Indonesia Inaugurates One of the Largest Solar Panel Installations in the Jababeka Industrial Area

Cikarang, August 9, 2023 – PT Unilever Indonesia, Tbk., which will celebrate its 90th anniversary this December, inaugurated a solar panel installation project today at its Beauty-Wellbeing and Nutrition plants in Jababeka Industrial Estate, Cikarang. This project stands as an essential component of the Unilever Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP) in Indonesia, with a capacity of 2.5 MWp, thereby establishing itself as one of the largest solar panel installations in Jababeka. The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives from the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bekasi District Government, Cikarang Listrindo, and PT Jababeka, Tbk, hosted by the leadership team of Unilever Global and Unilever Indonesia.

In his address, Yudho Dwinanda Priaadi, Director General of New Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE) of the Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, remarked, “The government has made a firm commitment to contribute to addressing climate change issues through a range of measures and policies. Firstly, by increasing the emission reduction target by own efforts to 31.89%, and with international assistance to 43.2% by 2030. Secondly, by aiming to achieve Net Zero Emission by 2060 or earlier. One of the key strategies to attain this goal is adopting renewable energy, which is set to account for 23% of the national energy mix by 2025. A primary focus lies in accelerating solar energy utilisation, requiring contributions from all sectors, including the industrial sector, as a user of 31% of total national energy consumption. The utilisation of solar emerges as an optimal solution for energy-intensive industries, effectively curbing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering the transition to renewable energy. The government commends PT Unilever Indonesia, Tbk. for participating in the collective endeavour to promote renewable energy usage and help reduce the carbon footprint through innovation and collaboration, exemplified by the installation of 2.5 MWp solar panels. It is hoped that the success of this solar panel construction will yield substantial benefits and serve as a role model for other players in the industry.”

Ira Noviarti, President Director of Unilever Indonesia, reiterated the Company’s commitment to strongly supporting the government’s renewable energy agenda and the Net Zero Emission target, “The challenges posed by climate change necessitate the involvement of all stakeholders in finding solutions. As a company that has been operating in the country for almost 90 years, Unilever Indonesia has consistently taken concrete actions through a series of programs guided by our global strategy, ‘The Unilever Compass’, whose first pillar is improving the health of the planet. Transitioning to solar energy as a clean energy source, particularly in our factories, is one of the concrete steps we have taken to ensure that we can significantly contribute to emission reduction. It is projected that the installation of solar panels in our two factories will result in a reduction of 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, equivalent to the impact of planting 20,000 trees.”

This initiative is integral to the Unilever Climate Transition Action Plan (CTAP). The CTAP, formulated by Unilever globally in 2021, established a series of targets aimed at constructing an emissions reduction roadmap that aligns with the aspirations of the 2015 Paris Agreement: to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The CTAP delineates the Company’s strategic measures to reduce emissions to zero within its operations by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2039.

With a capacity of 2.5 MWp, the solar panel installation, which will be installed in collaboration with Cikarang Listrindo, stands as one of the most extensive projects in Jababeka. Alongside the solar panels, the Company fulfils the remainder of its green electricity requirements by procuring Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from renewable power plants outside its operating area.

Apart from emissions reduction, the installation of solar panels contributes to the efficiency endeavours that Unilever Indonesia has consistently augmented on its operational front. Amid the volatility of commodity prices, especially natural gas, a key component for electricity generation, solar panel-generated electricity promises potential cost savings.

“This marks a significant milestone for Unilever Indonesia in our continuous pursuit of lessening our environmental footprint by promoting sustainable practices across the Company’s value chain. We are optimistic that more entities will join these efforts and, collectively, we can create a more efficient and environmentally friendly industrial climate,” Ira concluded.
