Downstreaming and digitization key to Indonesia’s power: Jokowi

President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted that downstreaming and digitisation are the keys to making Indonesia an economic superpower in its continent during the “Asian Century.”

During the BNI Investor Daily Summit 2024 on Tuesday, the president highlighted that downstreaming and digitisation are key to positioning Indonesia as an economic superpower in the Asian Century.

“In the Asian Century, economic growth has shifted from the Western World to Asia. Moreover, according to predictions, there will be three new superpowers, namely India, China, and Indonesia,” he said.

The president underscored Indonesia’s potential in the global economy, urging the nation to strengthen its economic stature and competitiveness amid global challenges.

He pointed out that geopolitical issues, such as the Middle East Crisis and the Ukraine-Russia War, have exacerbated the global economic slowdown and could impact Indonesia’s economy.

“We should be thankful that Indonesia’s economic growth remains above five percent,” he said.

He added that achieving developed-country status relies on maintaining annual growth above five percent, with aspirations for eight percent, as targeted by President-elect Prabowo Subianto.

Jokowi also stressed the importance of digitisation, particularly in developing data centers and data analytics ecosystems in the banking sector to support the national economy.

He highlighted achievements during his administration, including maintaining inflation at two to three percent, which is vital for economic stability.

Additionally, he noted the high consumer trust in Indonesia, citing an improvement in the spending index from 143.8 in the third quarter 2023 to 234.8 by the third quarter of 2024.

Jokowi expressed hope that Indonesia’s GDP per capita, currently at US$5,060, will exceed US$7,000 in the next five years and reach US$9,000 within the next decade.
