Indonesia Calls for Global Collaboration on Water Resilience

Indonesia calls for global collaboration on water resilience

“The minister then stressed that access to drinking water and proper sanitation are fundamental human rights and that everyone on the planet should have equal access to these resources.”

Indonesia highlighted the importance of resorting to collaborative actions in order to actualize water resilience at the global level at the Third High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”.

Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono underlined that President Joko Widodo, at the 10th World Water Forum held recently in Bali, stated that comprehensive collaboration is of the essence to make water an instrument for achieving shared prosperity.

“Such a collaboration is the key to the preservation of water for the sake of shared prosperity in the future,” he remarked at the conference being held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, as cited from a statement received here on Wednesday.

He then drew attention to Goal 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that mandates countries to actualize equitable access to clean water and safe sanitation by 2030.

However, he remarked that a relevant UN report released in 2022 showed that only 73 percent of the global population had access to proper drinking water services, while basic sanitation is only enjoyed by 57 percent of the population.

“As of 2023, Indonesia has managed to provide drinking water access to 92 percent of its population and basic sanitation services to 86 percent of its citizens. It is true, however, that we still have plenty to do to achieve Goal 6 by 2030,” Hadimuljono remarked.

The minister then stressed that access to drinking water and proper sanitation are fundamental human rights and that everyone on the planet should have equal access to these resources.

He then encouraged all participants of the international conference to work hand in hand to take transformative concrete actions in a bid to realize global water resilience while upholding the principles of sustainability, equality, and social justice.

“This forum can provide an opportunity for us to exchange experiences and stimulate intensified global collaboration,” he concluded.
