Carbon Economy Reshapes Global Business, Indonesia Seen Holding Strong Potential

JAKARTA — A carbon-based economy is gaining traction and reshaping the global business landscape, as nature is increasingly valued not only as a source of commodities but also for the economic worth of carbon, water, biodiversity and ecosystem services that are successfully preserved.

Indonesia is considered to hold a strategic position and significant opportunity within this shift, according to Heppy Trenggono, Founder and CEO of PT Visi Carbon Indonesia (VCarboN), who was speaking as keynote speaker at the “Ngobrol Santai Bareng Rektor” (NGOBRASREK #4) forum.

The forum, themed “Carbon Trade and Indonesia’s Green Future,” was held by Universitas Brawijaya’s Board of Professors on Friday, 7 August 2026.

Turning Natural Wealth into Economic Strength

“The world now pays not just for what we take, but what we protect,” Heppy said, adding that Indonesia possesses extraordinary natural wealth.

He said the challenge lies in bringing together science, technology, entrepreneurship and integrity to turn that wealth into a genuine economic strength for the country. According to Heppy, Indonesia has the opportunity to develop its natural resources into a new source of economic growth, though this will require strong backing from science, technology, entrepreneurship and governance built on integrity.

UB and VCarboN Open the Door to Collaboration

In line with this thinking, Universitas Brawijaya (UB) and VCarboN have begun exploring collaboration opportunities in developing the carbon economy, natural capital, climate technology, research and human resource strengthening. The collaboration is aimed at reinforcing Indonesia’s position in the development of the global green economy.

The forum was attended by UB Rector Prof. Widodo, the Chair of the Board of Professors, the Chair of the Academic Senate, and a number of UB professors and academics. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Sukoso, Professor at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, with Prof. Cahyo Prayogo, Professor at the Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Bio-Industry, serving as discussant.

Carbon Economy Now Shaping Global Economic Structures

In his presentation, Heppy explained that the carbon economy is no longer confined to environmental concerns. Developments in carbon pricing, carbon-intensity-based trade, capital flows, regulation, technology and natural capital are now helping to reshape the structure of the global economy.
